In the past the choice was always wood over laminate, but hardwood timber floors are a little more expensive making it hard for people on a budget. We are finding that these days, laminate is the top option as the premium flooring choice for many homes around Australia. While hardwood timber flooring is usually installed by the professionals, laminate has a special tongue in groove side that makes instillation a snap! Making it the easy choice for many DIY jobs around the home.
How is Laminate made?
Laminate flooring is made up of several layers all surrounding a high-density fibre (HDF) board and melamine resin. At its base, there is a moisture resistant barrier, to prevent damage from warping. On top is the design layer, a high-resolution picture is taken of real wood to give the laminate board the appearance of natural wood. Then a few layers of transparent melamine are pressed into the surface layer which is then finished with a wood texture to add the look and feel of real wood as well as making this product resistant to daily wear and tear.
Laminate is just like any floor covering that needs a solid base or sub floor. Foam underlay is placed between the laminate and the sub floor to provide a softer landing under foot. While hardwood timber flooring needs to turn up on site a few weeks before instillation to acclimatise to prevent shrinking. Laminate flooring is ready to be installed and you won’t have the hassle of sanding or staining. The greatest benefit of choosing laminate flooring for your home is knowing that it’s an eco-friendly product made from sustainability sourced wood.
